As we conclude this season of Lent, we are reminded that the cross is the heart of the gospel and that propitiation is the heart of the cross. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” What an amazing act of love. At the cross, Christ exchanges our sin for His righteousness. May we never take the cross for granted. May we never dismiss the work that was done. May we never lose our awe and reverence for Christ our sacrifice, our scapegoat, our propitiation.

Reflection

Take some time to read back through the passages that mention propitiation and meditate on the wonder of the work that Christ was able to accomplish at the cross. Take some time to read through the account of the crucifixion from one or more of the gospels. Look up hymns that talk about the power of the cross and the work of Christ such as “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” and meditate on the lyrics of those songs. Consider how that might impact your passion and emotion the next time you sing them in worship.
