The book of Judges validates from an historical perspective the biblical truth that given our sinful, broken nature we cannot do good and we will not seek the Lord (Ps 14:1-3, Rom 3:9-20). God’s redemptive plan intentionally shows us that there is no permanent deliverance through earthly kings so that we will look for our deliverance from the heavenly king—King Jesus.

Reflection
What are some of the things in this world that rob you of your affections for Christ? What do you get worked up about and lose sleep over? What can you begin to do to change your course so that you can regain the joy of salvation? Sometimes as in Judges, it is sin that steals that joy. If that is the case, take time to confess and repent and bask in the glory of Christ’s forgiveness. Sometimes, it is actions of others or the condition of society that gets you down. What would it look like for you to stop worrying and trust Jesus in those things? How does the community of believers help cultivate an assurance of salvation that allows us to rest in the promises of God even in a world that is spinning out of control? Take some time to meditate on Psalm 96 and consider the fact that our sovereign God reigns.
