Without the cross, there is no salvation. Without the cross, there is no eternal life. Without the cross, there is no resurrection. If we place our hope in anything but the cross, we will find insufficient faith to answer another of Jesus’ questions—one asked to the religious leaders of His day. “How can you escape the condemnation of hell?” (Mt 23:33, NKJV). It will not be from our own good works, our own suffering, or our own expertise in doctrine. We will be saved only by the power of the cross.

For further consideration:
Why was the cross necessary? Why couldn’t there be any other way? Take some time to read and then consider the words of Philippians 2:1-11. What are the implications of Christ’s humility for those of us who are Christ-followers today? What are your motives for church and theology and being obedient to practice the spiritual disciplines? Most of us would say that it isn’t selfish ambition or conceit, but how can we guard against using our own spirituality to judge that of others? Think about that day when we will be numbered among the people who bow at the name of Jesus. Picture what it will be like to see Christ in the fullness of His glory. Now, think of someone who may not know Jesus and ask God to help you share the good news of the cross with them.
