Legalism puts us at the center of our sanctification. It often creates a pride that causes some to apply it as necessary for our justification. The gospel on the other hand frees us from the dangers of legalism and false piety by calling us to place our trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross for our salvation and in the ongoing presence of the Holy Spirit for our spiritual growth and pursuit of holiness.
