Conversion by a God who loves us enough to change us is the only way to true greatness. Pride
will keep us from ever seeing the need for Jesus. It will keep us from embracing the cross as God’s
only provision for salvation. At the cross we see the Ruler of the Universe in all humility setting
the example for greatness. Greatness for us will only come when we take up our cross and follow
Him.

For further consideration:

How is pride viewed in our current culture? Is it the same kind of pride that is condemned in the
Bible or do you think it is different? How does Jesus redefine aspiring to greatness and seeking a
reward? How does this fit together with Him condemning pride and encouraging sacrificial
service? How does this passage support cooperation among Christian churches of various
denominations? What are some examples of giving a cup of water? How does doing it in the
name of Jesus further define the goodness of the act? What can you do this week to offer a cup
of water to a friend in need?
